I’m Fabian Banga, a Professor and Chair of the Modern Languages Department at Berkeley City College in Berkeley, CA. I teach Spanish composition, culture, and literature. My academic background includes a Ph.D. (2004) and an M.A. (2000) in Hispanic Languages and Literatures, as well as a B.A. (1998) in Spanish Language and Literature, all from the University of California, Berkeley.
I have had the honor of serving as President of the Foreign Language Association of Northern California (2014–2016) and as a Visiting Scholar at the Berkeley Language Center (2010–2011). I was also a member and Chair of the Committee on Community Colleges of the Modern Language Association (2019–2022). Additionally, I served as the Distance Education Coordinator for Berkeley City College (2007–2016) and the Peralta Community College District (2008–2016).
Throughout my career, I have received several recognitions, including the Chancellor’s Recognition Award (2016), President’s Awards (2007, 2013, 2015), and multiple academic honors during my time at UC Berkeley, such as the John K. Walsh Memorial Scholarship Award (1997).
Beyond teaching, I have worked as a consultant in instructional technology for organizations such as the CGIAR NGO Committee, the Sustainable Agriculture Networking and Extension program, and the CLADES Consortium. I’ve also edited academic and cultural journals, such as Everba and Lucero.
I have published six books and numerous articles on literary and cultural criticism. My most recent book, Representation of Artificial Intelligence in the Arts, Vol. 1: Androids, Golems, and Prometheus (Peter Lang US, 2019), examines the portrayal of AI and anthropoids in contemporary culture. I am currently working on additional volumes in this series, further exploring the representation of artificial intelligence in the arts.
